All of the zoo apes who take part in Steve Ross' research are "volunteer" subjects. If they show no interest in the touch screen Ross uses to test their smarts, they are excused from duty. Even after they are actively engaged in a project, the animal can skip a day if it wants or stop altogether. Robert Henreich
